Oak Bay enjoys a Sub-Mediterranean climate with an average of nearly 2,200 sunshine hours a year, balmy temperatures and moderate rainfall. To emphasize that, unlike much of Canada, Oak Bay rarely sees freezing temperatures, Oak Bay challenged other municipalities to a Palm Tree Count, held annually from 2003 to 2006. It has given Oak Bay bragging rights as the Palm Tree Capital of Canada. From 535 palms counted in 2003 the total grew to 2,669 in 2006.
Exotic gardens featuring palm trees have become increasingly popular in the Victoria area, as evidenced at Oak Bay’s annual palm tree sale where over 600 palms trade hands in a couple of hours. At least a dozen species of ‘hardy’ palm trees can be spotted in the region and some of the mature trees have reached heights of over 30 feet. Many are visible from the street when walking or driving through Oak Bay.
A self-guided tour has been developed which highlights the best palm tree sites - and the list grows every year.
Take the tour!
